Id-ul-Zuha is named Bakrid in the Indian subcontinent. It is one of the crucial festivals of Muslims which is celebrated all over the country. This festival celebrated from the 10th to the 12th day in Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah. This year Bakrid falls on 17th November.

The specific meaning of Bakrid is, ‘Bakr’ is devoted to Goat in Urdu and ‘id’ is derived from the word ‘iwd’ which means ‘Festival’ in Arabic language. It is very much dependent on the visibility of the moon and it also varies from country to country. The day falls about 70 days after the end of Ramzan month.

Bakrid is also known as the Festival of Sacrifice because on this day there is a tradition to sacrifice a goat in the name of Allah. A fully grown-up sheep or goat, which is free from disease, is considered for sacrifice and then offered.

This day is celebrated with great zeal and dedication by Muslims. Men and women wear new clothes and go to mosques and offer prayers for the peace and wealth of all Muslims. The sacrifice is done before any time in afternoon. After the offerings all the Muslim people meet each other along with saying “Eid Mubarak”.

The sacrifice meat is distributed among the needy and poor people. The first portion of the sacrificed offering is consumed by the family, second part is distributed among friends and relatives, and the third part is distributed among the poor and needy. The Law book of Quran enjoins to offer meals to the poor on this auspicious day.
